WhatsApp service messages are no longer free: what changes on October 1, 2026 (and what you'll pay in each country)

Diego Cedeño7 min

If you've heard that WhatsApp is about to start charging businesses for messages, the news is real, but narrower than the headlines suggest. Starting October 1, 2026, Meta charges for the replies a business sends through the WhatsApp API, with 1,000 free each month per number. This guide covers what WhatsApp service message pricing includes, what stays free, what the overage costs in your customers' countries and what to have in place before September 30.

What changes, and when

Meta announced the change on July 1, 2026. A service message is any reply that is not a template, whether someone on your team writes it or a third-party AI agent generates it (replies from Meta's own agent are billed separately). It can only be sent inside the 24-hour window that opens, and resets, every time the customer messages you. These replies haven't been charged since November 1, 2024.

Starting October 1, 2026, at midnight in your WhatsApp Business Account's time zone, Meta charges for them one by one, the same way it already charges for templates. The charge is per message, not per conversation: reply five times to the same customer and that's five. Only delivered messages count.

Meta then added a free tier: 1,000 free messages a month for each business phone number, counting only delivered service messages. That's what its pricing page, updated September 10, 2026, says. The count goes back to zero each month, and whatever you don't use is gone.

33

replies a day add up to about 1,000 a month

To figure out whether you'll pay anything: about 33 replies a day adds up to 1,000 a month. If you answer a handful of customers by hand, you're nowhere near it. With an AI agent, or with several people replying from the same number, you can get there without noticing, because every message counts, including the one that just says thanks.

WhatsApp service message pricing by country

Once the 1,000 free messages are used, each delivered service message is charged at the utility and authentication rate for the customer's country, based on the country code of their phone number. What matters is who you're replying to, not where your business is. There are no volume discounts.

Customer's countryUSD per messageUSD per 1,000
Argentina0.026026.00
Chile0.020020.00
Colombia0.00080.80
Mexico0.00858.50
Peru0.030030.00
Rest of Latin America (includes Venezuela)0.011311.30
North America (US and Canada)0.00343.40
Spain0.020020.00

These are Meta's rates in effect from October 1, 2026, according to its pricing page. Peru is the only country in the table whose rate goes up that day, from $0.0200 to $0.0300 per message. If you see the older figure somewhere else, it comes from the July rate card.

Venezuela doesn't have its own rate. It falls under Rest of Latin America, along with Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and most of Central America and the Caribbean.

An example: 1,500 replies in a month to customers in the US. 1,000 are free, and 500 × $0.0034 comes to $1.70. The same 500 extra replies to customers in Mexico would be 500 × $0.0085 ≈ $4.25.

What stays free

None of this changes:

  • Messages your customers send you. Meta doesn't charge for what a user writes to a business.
  • The WhatsApp Business app. The change applies to the WhatsApp Business Platform, meaning the API. If you reply from the free app without connecting it to the API, this charge doesn't reach you.
  • Replies inside the free 72-hour window that opens when a customer messages you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad or from the call-to-action button on your Facebook Page. For that window to open, you have to reply within the first 24 hours.

When a customer comes in through a click-to-WhatsApp ad, your replies in that window are still free.

What to do this week

If you reply through the API, either directly or through a platform, check these before October 1:

  1. Find out who owns your WhatsApp Business Account on Meta. The payment method goes on that account. If you use a platform, ask them whose name your WhatsApp Business Account is registered under at Meta.
  2. Add a payment method before September 30. You do this in the Billing Hub, which shows up in Meta Business Suite as Billing & payments. Make sure the card is assigned to your WhatsApp Business Account.
  3. Estimate your volume. If you send more than about 33 replies a day, you'll go over 1,000.
  4. Look at which countries you reply to. With customers in Colombia, the overage is tiny. In Peru or Argentina, it's worth running the numbers against the table.
  5. Check whether you reply with utility templates. Those become billable too.

What if you don't add a payment method? Meta doesn't explain it the same way on every page. Its pricing page, updated September 10, 2026, says it delivers the free 1,000 and then stops delivering. Another Meta page, dated August 25, 2026, says that without a payment method on file by September 30, it stops delivering service messages as of October 1. Either way, your customers simply stop getting your replies. What the two pages agree on is that, with the payment method added before September 30, your replies keep being delivered.

What happens in ReadyChatAI

ReadyChatAI connects to WhatsApp through the official API, so the replies your AI agent sends and the ones your team sends from Messages are service messages and count toward the 1,000. The charge is Meta's, billed by Meta directly to your payment method. Your plan doesn't change, and we add nothing on top of Meta's price. Our plans are separate.

In Channels › WhatsApp › Show More, each number's card shows how many of the month's 1,000 free messages you've used. It counts messages sent through ReadyChatAI that Meta reports as delivered. If you also reply from another tool with the same number, Meta's real count may be higher.

If a number reaches 1,000 and Meta confirms to us that there is no payment method, or if at any point Meta rejects a reply because of a billing problem, we let you know and pause the AI agent on that number. The card shows AI agent paused, and Chat Auto-Reply turns off. Your customers' messages still arrive in Messages and you can reply by hand, although Meta won't deliver those replies either until the payment issue is resolved. Right now Meta generally doesn't let us see whether an account has a card. When we don't know, we notify you at 1,000 without pausing the agent, and the pause only comes if Meta starts rejecting replies.

Once you add the card, press Confirm billing method in Channels › WhatsApp and turn Chat Auto-Reply back on. If you do nothing, the agent turns itself back on with a customer's first message of the next month, unless you had switched it off by hand. What we can't do is add the payment method for you: Meta only allows the account owner to do that. The step-by-step is in our help center.
